Secondly, compare the Base case NPV and Opportunity 2 NPV, according to the results of NPV calculations, we can obtained the results is Opportunity 2 NPV is positive but it is less than Base case, under NPV rule, Opportunity 2 should be accept, even the NPV is less than Base case. If Penta Ltd accept Opportunity 2, they should be consider the uncertainty factors is the retail business is not their expertise, if will affected the retail business cant run efficiency, they may need to hire outside management and salesperson to run their new business, it will increased their operation and other relevant cost. 2. Evaluate the investment opportunities and alternative methods Net present value (NPV) is different than the present value, the present value is no considered the initial investment of the project, present value is compute the expected cash flow by the discounting them at the required rate of return. NPV is including the initial investment of the project, which means is the total amount of the initial investment minus present value. Advantages of NPV: NPV have considered the time value of money which can make the forecast cash flow discount back to today cash value, it can allows management to decide which project should be invest through the positive NPV or negative NPV. NPV is uses cash flow, not accounting profit, cash flow is more reliably, because cash flow is not affected by judgment of the accounting policies and cash flow is more difficult to manipulate. Accounting profit may adjusted by the management due to few reasons (creative account) and accounting profit would affected by judgment on accounting policies. NPV can take account of conventional and non-conventional cash flows, as well as changes in discount rate during project and gives absolute measure of project value. Disadvantages of NPV: Since the NPV is uses the cash flow, project cash flows is very difficult to estimate, in the real practice, the project cash flow is determined based on managements preference not actual cash flow. NPV allows the management to accept all projects with positive NPV, if two project simultaneous positive NPV, the management should choose the project with higher NPV. In addition to NPV method used to evaluate the investment opportunities, there are other ways can evaluate the investment opportunities, such as internal rate of return (IRR), Payback period and Profitability index. Internal rate of return (IRR): IRR is discount rate which gives zero NPV for project which the decision rule is allows the management to accept all projects with an IRR greater than the companys cost of capita or the companys target rate of return. Advantage of Internal rate of return (IRR) IRR can indicator for the choosing investment, if the result show that IRR is higher than the companys cost of capital or higher than the companys target rate than the project should be invest if there is no multiple IRR, compare between the IRR and NPV, when the project is mutually exclusives, NPV should be select advice. Disadvantage of Internal rate of return (IRR) IRR have no consider the time value of money, IRR method assumes that the opportunity cost of capital is the same for all cash flow. NPV have considered the changes in discount rate during project, but IRR ignores the changes in discount rate during project. If the projects with non-conventional cash flows and applying IRR method and that may occur multiple IRR, in this situation, if compare with the NPV, NPV should be select advice. Normally, NPV gives more correct selection advice to the management about mutually exclusive projects. Payable period: The payback period is a simple method to calculate how manage time can recover the capital spent on an initial investment. Advantage of payable period: Payback period can give simple concept to the companys management to understand how much time the cash will flow back to the company. Payback period is easy to understand than other method to the management. Payback period is easier to calculate than other method, such as NPV and IRR and the payback period is uses cash, not accounting profit. Cash flow is more reliably, because cash flow is not affected by judgment of the accounting policies and cash flow is more difficult to manipulate. Accounting profit may adjusted by the management due to few reasons (creative account) and accounting profit would affected by judgment on accounting policies. Disadvantage of payable period: Payback period only considers the cash flows within the payback period; it is no nothing about the project. Payback period have no consider the size of cash flows, timing of cash flows and the time value of money which can not discount back the forecast cash flow to today value and payback period does not consider the risk of the project, risk is very important element for the consider whether the project should be invest. If ignores that will affected the management decision making. Profitability index: Profitability index is that the present value ration of a projects cash flow to initial investment. When the result of profitability index is 1 indicates that the project should be accept, and this is consistent with net present value greater than 0. Advantage of Profitability index: Profitability index and tells the management whether the investment of project increases the firms value, it is easily to understand for the management decision making, profitability have considers all cash flow of the project and considers the time value of money, through the cost of capital, profitability considers the risk of future cash flows. Disadvantages of Profitability index: Profitability index is based on the cost of capital to calculate the result, but the cost of capital is very difficult to estimate accurately. When to use the profitability index to compare mutually exclusive projects which may not give the correct decision to the management, if compare mutually exclusive projects, NPV gives more correct selection advice to the management about mutually exclusive projects. 3. Implications of undertaking Option 2 If Penta Ltd undertaking Option 2, enter into the retail business, based on the acquisition the option 2 NPV which result is positive, therefore, the project should be invest. In this selection of Penta Ltd, it will seen as a vertical acquisition, vertical acquisition is the company in the same industry at different stages of production merge, vertical acquisition have backwards acquisition and forwards acquisition, Penta Ltd is seen as a forward acquisition, it is because that Penta Ltd is to acquire a small chain of shops in UK and enter into the retailing business under its own brand, it is same business but in differ stage. Vertical acquisition can secures vital outlets for finished products. It can secure Penta Ltd can quickly and directly to sell their product. Normally, the company makes acquisition decision that objective is that they want through acquisition to gain synergy effect and economies of scale effect. Synergy effect is arise when the acquire complementary activities lead to increasing profit or output, synergy effect normally reflected by the company operating, financial and managerial, but the problem is the synergy effect is very difficult to quantify before the companies combine and also difficult to realise once combination occurred. Economies of scale can make the acquirer have a larger scale of operations or through the acquisition can more efficient to use the assets through this activity leads to decrease in average unit cost. Economies of scale normally reflected by the company production, distribution and marketing. In this situation, Penta Ltd better able to experience the economies, it is because that Penta Ltd is making a vertical acquisition, it can help Penta Ltd to entry to the new market and extend their business to retail business, from manufacturing products to sell is also a train. Penta Ltd can through the acquisition to secures their the can more efficient to sell their product. Even Penta Ltd able to experience the economies, due to Penta Ltd is entry to new market, retail is not their expertise. If Penta Ltd transfer their managerial skills to the new business, due to the retail business is not their expertise, that will cause the management of Penta Ltd can not efficient to run the new business, it may cause Penta Ltd need to recruit new management and sales persons with a good customer services and good retail experience and skills to manage the new business. It will be increased the cost of capital. And the other problem is the culture problem, culture problem is more important, it is because that when two company is merge together, often occur the culture problem. Penta Ltd can through the acquisition to quickly to entry to the new market for existing product, it is faster than organic growth and through the acquisition, and Penta Ltd can savint the carry costs such as research and development cost. Penta Ltd through the acquisition can quickly to growth their market share and increased market power or market size. 4.1 Penta Ltd has access to unlimited funds If Penta Ltd access to unlimited funds, since the both option 1 and 2 is a positive NPV, under the NPV rules, if the project result is positive, the project should be accept. For Investment Option 1(Build new factory abord), the investment cost of the factory is 8 million. For Investment Option 2(Enter into the retail business), the investment cost of entering into the retail business is 5 million. The total investment cost of both investment opportunities is 13 million. The company have sufficient funds to undertake both investment under unlimited funds, even option 1 NPV is higher than option 2 NPV, separate to discuss the implication of option 1 and option 2. Option 1 is to build new factory abroad, Option 1 NPV is higher than base case and option 2, option 1 can generate more revenue to Penta Ltd, Option 1 can increase Penta Ltd market share in their business and increase their production capacity which may increase their output and profit, through build new factory abroad, Penta can increase their production efficiency, improve their internal operation. On the other hand, to build new factory will increase their operation cost. Option 2 is to enter into the retail busines, this option through the acquisition can help Penta quickly to entry new market and extend their business from manufacturer to the retail business which can secures Penta Ltd vital outlets for finished products. Through the acquisition they can extend their market size and market share. On the other hand, retail business is not their expertise, it may can not run efficiency, they may need to hire new management with good sales and customer experience to manage the new business, it will increase their cost. Based on above information, Penta Ltd should undertake option 1, it is because that option 1 is their expertise, option 2 is not their expertise, and option 1 is higher than option 2. Therefore, Penta Ltd should undertake option 1. 4.2 Penta Ltd is only able to raise capital up to  ¿Ãƒâ€šÃ‚ ¡10million Since Penta Ltd is only able to raise capital up to 10million, therefore, it should be undertake the highest NPV option, the highest of the two options is option 1 which NPV is higher than option 2 and base case. Penta Ltd should undertake option 1 not option 2, even the both NPV is positive. To build new factory an increase Penta Ltd market share in their business and increase their production capacity which may increase their output and profit, through build new factory abroad, Penta can increase their production efficiency, improve their internal operation and reduce the average cost of production. On the other hand, to build new factory will increase their operation cost such as labour cost, they should be hire person to run their new factory. If build new factory aboard, Penta Ltd should considering the foreign currency risk. The foreign currency risk usually affects Penta Ltd when their make export and/or import activity, when the money must be converted to another currency, thus changes in the currency exchange rate will cause the cost material or sales the product amount decrease or increase when the money converted back into original currency. Many self injurers will wear long sleeve shirts and pants constantly even in warm weather and have unexplained or unexplainable wounds. The presence of a knife, lighter, or matches in a purse or book bag with no logical explanation for its being there, making excuses for injuries, wanted to do own laundry, and blood or burn stains on the inside of clothing are also signs to look for that are common amongst self mutilators. Debate on Civil War - 1069 Words

American Historians’ Debate on the Civil War The American Civil War has without a doubt left a permanent divide on this great nation’s past and present. American historians still debate the causes of a war that began in 1861 between the Union states and Confederacy states. The war can be seen as caused by the principle of slavery, the growing tension between northern and southern ideology or due to a crack in the political system of the time. United States’ history classes focus on teaching students different views as to the origin of the Civil War. Three renowned American historians who explore this topic beautifully are Eric Foner, James G. Randall, and Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. Foner provides the best explanation to the origin of†¦show more content†¦Schlesinger also makes the point that abolitionists were as important in the issue of slavery in the Civil War as anti-Nazis and anti-Communists are today (Schlesinger 3). Arthur Schlesinger refuted Randall’s position on the Civil War so powerfully , that he used his own words and logic against him. If James G. Randall had read the aforementioned article by Arthur M. Schlesinger, his response would be that the interpretation given by Arthur is a poor approach to history. Randall has stated in his article, The Blundering Generation, how many historians view culture issues, such as the sectionalism between the north and south in the United Sates, as inevitable causes for Civil War. However, to James Randall, many other countries face the same problems without resorting to the same measures. Randall gives the example of â€Å"Scandinavia or the Netherlands or Switzerland (Randall 3)† as countries with culture and racial issues that have not waged war for the purpose of cultural ideology, as he portrays slavery to be. Randall does not believe a moral issue like slavery to be enough of a driving force between war, especially one that produced the most American deaths than any other war. James Randall believes, â€Å"war cau sation tends to be ‘explained’ in terms of great forces (Randall 4).† Randall credits most of the great forces to be a result of theShow MoreRelatedThe Debate Over The Civil War860 Words   |  4 PagesThere has been much debate as to whether the Civil War could have been avoided or not. The Evansville Daily Journal argues that the Civil War was inevitable, but Alexander Stephens disagrees and proposes that the war could have been avoided. Introduction: The NBA is one of the United States’ favorite sports leagues, with each team averaging 100 million dollars of income each year before expenses.†¦show more content†¦Another limitation is that not all players play the same position. The goals of different positions vary from scoring, defending, passing and many others. There are point guards, shooting guards, small forwards, power forwards, and centers. Not to mention that strategies involving these positions have specific players take shots rather than everyone attempting to. Adding on that, there might be a limitation to the amount of data that was collected. Only having collected 64 pieces it would have been better to collect all players from the NBA to better reflect the full span of players. Lastly, one reason for a lower PPG is the coach’s decisions or being suspended. Benching a player (sitting them out) would cause them less game time for the season and thus reduce their average. Conclusion In spite of the aforementioned limitations, the project was done according to plan and it was found that the chi squared calculation value of 0.242226345, which is less than the chi squared critical value of 3.841, thus accepts the null hypothesis that points scored are independent values to their player s height. By analyzing this categorical data it helps disprove that if you expect points to be higher with height you will be wrong. Furthermore, the investigation clearly shows that there is almost no correlation between points scored and height by looking at the r-correlation coefficient. Going to Meet the Man by James Baldwin

Question: Describe about the Two short discussions regarding two short american literature pieces. Answer: The story Going to meet the man is centred on fierce racial discrimination on the black community and is narrated by a white man to his wife. It is a clear demonstration of the injustice imposed by the whites on the coloured members of the community. The narration appears to be a joke considering the nature it is narrated despite the fact that the narrator Is among the members of the society who are abused (James 1995, P1328). Irony It is not ironical that Baldwin who was an African American wrote this story. This piece of work is justified since he experienced racial discrimination to some extent. Racism is littered throughout his works as well as him identifying jazz music as part of the black culture. He says that jazz music was the only avenue that the black Negros used to air their predicament. Major Conflict The major conflict in the story is the fierce and tragic racial discrimination suffered by the black and coloured community in North America. The story demonstrates the physical aggression encountered by the black individuals in North America, a community dominated by whites. They are attacked and brutally assassinated with no apparent reason. For instance, Big C Jim beat Negros because of their singing (James 1995, P1328). It is ironical that despite the apparent inequalities and injustices the narrator considers himself to be a relatively better person than his compatriots. For example, he sees as funny the Negros ordeal. Hypocrisy The narrator is not hypocritical since his childhood experiences were to a large degree shaped by his father. His arguments are reflected in accordance to the white community as well where males were dominant in their family and could be referred to as role models by the rest of the household. Recitatif by Morrison Settings The story is set in a state childrens home in St. Bonny's in the early 1960s, where the two main characters Twyla and Roberta link up. The two meet again eight years later late into 1960s this setting is significant since this is a pioneering story regarding racial authorship. This is so because their ethnic backgrounds are debatable ( Smith Larry 1996, P45). Apparently, the two belong to different social classes, but this is not buttressed as being either Afro-American or Caucasian. Importance of the Setting The setting of the story is important since it keeps changing over time thus mirroring the how the two characters environment changes. Its movement originally is episodic in nature from the time the two Twyla and Roberta link up in the orphanage, up to the end- the fifth of the five scenes. While they were children, their lives fell into a rhythm which occasionally could be lost and later return. Main struggle of the protagonist Her main struggle is to resuscitate her relationship with Roberta, which used to exist at the beginning of the story at their childhood. She is sympathetic since she finds it hard to withstand racial abuse hurled at the friends ( Smith Larry 1996, P45). Postmodernist technique This is apparent in this piece since the idea of after-World War II atomization of identity in which the and integrity of selfness is engulfed in atomized fragments of identity that do not symbolize a major unit of determinable wholeness. British Airwayss Environment free essay sample

British Airways (BA) is the UK’s largest international scheduled airline, operating international and domestic scheduled and charter air services for the carriage of passengers, freight and mail and the provision of ancillary services. The airline flies to over 550 destinations globally and is considered to be a leader in the industry. In order to profitably satisfy customer needs, an organisation must understand its external and internal situation including the customer, the market and its own capabilities. Furthermore, it needs to understand and adapt to the dynamic and uncontrollable factors of the environment in which it operates. 2005 saw a new Chief Executive being appointed in BA; Willie Walsh, former head of Aer Lingus. The man with an excellent reputation for driving down costs has stressed his determination to realise his predecessors, Sir Rod Erdington’s, goal of a 10% operating margin. 2. 0External Analysis 2. 1 Micro Environment 2. 1. 1 Market Analysis The first thing that needs to be done is to identify which market BA operate in to be able to carryout an accurate analysis. We will write a custom essay sample on British Airwayss Environment or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page BA operates in the airline industry. Their main market is hence transportation but they also work in other areas such as communication, leisure and logistics. During the last 10 years the airline industry in the UK has changed out of almost all recognition. Today, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the airline industry is going through ‘the worst crisis in history’ (BBC, 2006) British Airways operates within the highly competitive airline market. The UK market for airlines grew by 1. % since 2003 to reach a value of ? 8. 7 billion in 2004. The number of passengers flying from UK airports alone has increased from 70 million in 2000, to 86 million. The development of a fifth terminal at London Heathrow testifies this growth. However, against this expanding consumer market, the airline industry continues to struggle with the continuous threat of terrorism, high fuel prices and increased competition. The two main sectors of the market are long-haul and short-haul, both of which BA operate in. The airline sector is more competitive today than it has been at any time in the past, providing consumers with more choice and cheaper fares than ever before due to the emergence of low-cost airlines British Airways operates within two strategic groups within the airline sector – the short-haul and the long-haul. Each of these sectors has different competitors (see fig 1). One group consists of airlines with regional operations offering scheduled flights and competing on costs. The second group offer long haul flights, with quality environments and services to a range of destinations. Therefore, BA competes on a global, European, national and regional scale. Within the UK, BA is the largest carrier in the market accounting for 45. 1% of passengers in 2004 (Euro monitor) with Virgin Atlantic being the second largest carrier in the market with 9. 2% market share. It is also likely that long-haul licenses will be granted to low-cost airlines which will enable them to compete in both strategic groups increasing its influence on BA’s strategy (see appendix 6). In Europe, the UK’s EasyJet and Ryanair were the pioneers of budget airline travel. Their initial business model was based upon offering low fares through outstanding cost management. Lufthansa’s change in strategy will have direct affect on BA as they continue to attract customers for their high quality standards. Another strategy that seems to be emerging amongst traditional carriers is to reduce fares in order to become more competitive with the low-cost airlines. New planes, new routes, additional flights and management changes are all factors that impinge a business. Such changes made by a competitor need constant monitoring in order for BA to examine its current position and develop future strategies. 2. 2 Macro Environmental (PEST Analysis) 2. 2. 1 Political and Legal Factors The start of the millennium is turning out to be some of the most difficult times that the airline industry has ever faced. The events of terrorism attacks in September 11, 2001 in New York and July 7, 2005 in London along with the wars in Iraq have no doubt caused an unprecedented crisis and political instability. The events have caused the introduction of new security regulations from the EU and US that come into effect in summer 2006 and a fall in customer travelling confidence. Governments have controlled where airlines can fly, and aspects of their product planning and pricing policies. In recent years, substantial regulatory reform has taken place, giving carriers more opportunity and increasing the market competition. Deregulated companies like BA require systems that enable decisions to be made quickly open skies is an agreement which changes the regulatory landscapes significantly (appendix 1). A significant legal factor affecting BA is the power of trade Unions. BA has suffered many strike actions (August 2004 and August 2005) and is aware of the implications that the trade unions can cause. Legal regulations on employee rights, customer rights and an upsurge in environmental and ecological issues are more factors that BA must consider. 2. 2. 2 Economic Factors The demand for air travel is characterised by a very high income elasticity. Therefore, as the world economy grows, so the demand for air travel can be expected to increase too. The political situation in Iraq has helped to drive oil prices to a record high and for BA, the oil price rise might add ? 100 million to their costs. In response, the cost of fuel surcharges is always at risk (appendix 2). BA is in the business of transporting people to and from worldwide destinations for both business and pleasure. If the international economy slows down, business trades less and fewer business people will use planes. Equally, people may choose less exciting holidays. 2. 2. 3 Social Factors The social and cultural influences on business vary from country to country however it is important that such factors are considered and include demographic and cultural aspects. These factors affect customer needs and the size of potential markets. Demographic changes have resulted in the development of the ‘grey’ market who are spending more on leisure and travelling. Lifestyles, tastes and fashions are all changing; customers require opportunities to visit new and interesting, often long-haul, and destinations. 2. 2. 4 Technological Factors Technology is vital for competitive advantage, and is a major driver of globalisation. A key issue will be the extent to which technological advancements can offset upward pressures on prices and costs. Online sales are regarded highly important by BA and they are placing considerable faith in its website presence to boost online-sales which will reduce customer traffic via BA’s call centres. E-Tickets are now the standard ticket format used by BA, making flight ticketing more straightforward, flexible and secure.

Hubris in Antigone essays

Hubris in Antigone essays Sophocless Antigone deals with many aspects of good and evil. One of the most important points discussed in this tragedy is the idea of hubris. Hubris can be defined in many ways such as excessive pride, arrogance, and overstepping boundaries. Many people argue that both Creon, the ruler of Thebes, and Antigone, his niece, exhibit hubris. This text is very controversial in that it forces its readers to question its characters motives and decide whether their actions are justified. Topics such as what a kings duty to his country is and what a womans role in society is, is brought into focus. The story takes place right after the death of Polyneices and Eteocles, but there is some necessary background information you need to know first. Before the story took place, Oedipus was the ruler of Thebes. He had four children: Antigone, Ismene, Eteocles, and Polyneices. A prophecy drove Oedipus from his country, leaving his two sons to rule. Oedipus declared that the two boys would rule alternately, starting with Eteocles. The problem begins when Eteocles refuses to step down from the throne when his rule is up. Polyneices, who is married to the daughter of the king of Argos, leads the Argives and several other cities against Thebes, ultimately resulting in the death of the two brothers. Creon, their uncle, then took up the throne and proclaimed: Tto the citizens about Oedipus sons./For Eteocles, who died this citys champion,/ showing his valors supremacy everywhere,/ he shall be buried in his grave with every rite/ of sanctity given to heroes under earth./ However, his brother, Polyneices, a returned exile,/ who sought to burn with fire from top to bottom/ his native city, and the gods of his own people;/ who sought to taste the blood he shared with us,/ and lead the rest of us to slavery/ I here proclaim to the city that this man/ shall no one honor with a grave and no one shall m...

Business advise Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words - 1

Business advise - Essay Example This massive drop in revenue may result in the hospital being unable to meet operational cost thus resulting in closure. The first solution to the problem is that the hospital can form its own ACO. Since the hospital has access to funding as a source of capital, it can easily raise money to set up an electronic record of patients (McCaffrey 217).The hospital has trained health professionals who can handle clients. This is extremely beneficial since to hospital will not need any additional funding as it makes use of resources already at its disposal. However, this is time consuming and since most of the patients around already belong to a functioning ACO, it would be very hard to convince them to join the new outfit. Second, the hospital can pot to buy some of the ACOs already in operation. The hospital would spend money on the acquisition only; the rest of the infrastructure is already in place. The challenge in this case would be convincing the doctors involved to selling their venture (McCaffrey 218).The option of buying into an already established ACO would be the most appropriate. Buying existing ACOs is a low level of risk because the system is already functional and has a client base ready to receive

What kind of education did Cyrus receive in persia and media, and how Essay

What kind of education did Cyrus receive in persia and media, and how did these two education bring out what Cyrus is like by nature - Essay Example ?  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Xenophon gives an account of Cyrus’s education in his childhood and boyhood first at the court of his father who is the King of Persians and secondly at the court of his father, the king of the Medes. With respect to the Persian constitution, the state educates the children and they learn the art of justice, moderation, and hunting as a way of preparing them for their future engagement in war. The number of citizens is restricted to 120,000 men who are referred to as â€Å"those equal in honor† and comprise those whose parents could give formal education. Any of the citizens (isotimoi) is allowed to hold office but the stress of the Persian constitution is strict law and regulation. If anyone does not fulfill any of the required steps in preparation to becoming a full citizen, then they are disqualified from the citizens’ body. Similarly, decisions concerning justice and rule of law are rigorously upheld. During one of his school days, Cyrus is whipped by his teachers because in a trial case brought before him, he decides in line with common sense instead of the written law. When he is twelve years of age, Cyrus leaves Persia for Medes where he lives at the court of his grandfather, the Medes’ king. Contrary to Persia, life at the court of Medes is excessive. At one time, Cyrus reproves his grandfather for drunkenness and lack of reasonableness. When Cyrus has to decide between remaining at the Medish court or going back to Persia, his mother compares the Medish and the Persian courts in strong terms. The mother describes the two courts as not being in agreement about what justice entails. She describes the Medish kingdom as tyrannical whereas the Persian kingdom is founded on equality which they believe constitutes justice. She describes the king of Persia as very observant on the law rather than his will. She warns Cyrus to be careful lest he is beaten alive when he returns home (Persia) on the ground of the tyrannical rather than kingship

The importance of Pompeii today Essay Example for Free

The importance of Pompeii today Essay QNo1:1a: The volcanic eruption results in the loss of people’s life and home making their families helpless and homeless. Sometimes it destroys the village under the ash or lava. 1b: On the 24th August in the year AD 79, the people of Pompeii were going about their business in the usual way. Suddenly it grew dark a great was leaving the top of mountain. The people of Pompeii started to run out of the town, but more than 2000 of them didn’t get for. Stones and cinders began to fall on the town and the town was completely buried. 1c: The importance of Pompeii today is that the Italian government has very carefully cleared away the volcanic matter to uncover public buildings, private houses, shops and market places. We can see where people lived and how they live and can make a picture depicting of their culture. From the body of a Roman soldier which was found by the archaeologist we can, today, understand the people of that time and the things they possessed at that time. 1d: The people who have been living near volcanoes know the merits of the soil formed by the condensation of the matter erupted by the volcanoes, how fertile that is. 1e: Tristan da Cunha was a living island which had erupted many time and forced people to leave their places. The volcano was dormant. QNo3: (i) Erupting – suddenly coming out of something – volcano has started erupting. (ii) Cinders – a piece of material that is left after something such as wood or coal has burned – the ash is occupied from cinders. (iii) Extinct – a volcano that is unlikely to erupt – extinction is a fact of living. (iv) Dormant – something that is not active – the volcanoes after losing capability of Eruption become dormant. (v) Lava – a kind of rock which comes out of volcano in the form of a very hot liquid lava after cooling becomes solid rocks. QNo4: A Country I Would Like To Visit I have a craving to go to a foreign country. The very thought sends a wave of thrill in me. I feel that a visit to some foreign country will add to my knowledge of men and manners and I shall be able to know more of the world and its geography. There are a number of countries where people generally go. There is U.S.A., the richest country of the world. It is a land of skyscrapers, crime and affluence, to is said that out of every two families there one has got a car. There is the United Kingdom, whose inhabitants ruled over India for over a century and fleeced her of all her wealth. There is Russia—a super power, the leader, of the countries with Communist ideology. Japan, too, is a country which has fascination for some. Japan is once again making rapid strides towards industrialization after the mishap of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. During the Second World-war two American bombs had razed them to the ground and brought Japan to her knees. Germany, too, is advancing rapidly towards industrialization. Which country I would most like to visit? Well, I have no particular fascination for the United Kingdom. The reason is simple enough. I have heard so much about the country from my friends and relatives who have been there that I feel there would be nothing new for me to see. The visit to Russia is out of question. Undoubtedly, Russia is a great country. She has made great progress in science and technology. Yet its way of life is not congenial to my taste. It is a Communist country. There is no liberty of speech. Adverse criticism is not tolerated. The country I would most like to go is the U.S.A. Not that it is a rich country. The Americans are the best people in the world. There is no formality in their behaviour. If India is now able to tide over her problem  it is all due to American help. Food grains worth billions were imported from that country and the food problem is all but solved. It is also helping the country with the technical knowhow in some of the major industries. The Americans also speak the English language which I can speak and write with ease. I have therefore, decided to go to America as and when I get an opportunity to do so. QNo5 : (i) Friend: Hey, I told you about that problem. Me: Which one? Friend: About my dad’s broken car. Me: Yeah. So? Friend: What should I do now? Me: What can I say May be you should talk to your dad about it. Friend: Shall I lie to him? Me: No. Just don’t make this situation worst by lying to your dad about it. Friend: So? Me: Go and tell him the truth. Tell him what happened and how that happened. Tell him that it was neither yours nor the opposite driver’s fault but because of the slippery road. Friend: Will that be ok? Me: Yeah. I think so. Friend: Okay. Thanks brother for the advice. (ii) Mother: Vacations are not about sleeping late and watching TV all day. You can take up photographs, learn an instrument, learn judo Son/Daughter: I really worked hard for my exam. I do want to rest. Mom: Okay. I know but I will not allow you to watch TV all day and do nothing. Son/Daughter: But mom Mother: No. I don’t want to listen anything now. Son/Daughter: Ok fine. I’ll do something but not today, by tomorrow, I promise. Mother: Are you lying to me? Son/Daughter: How can I! Mother: Okay. But only today you can keep being lazy. Son/Daughter: Thank You! You are the sweetest mom in the world. Mother: Okay Okay Now stop buttering. QNo7: (i) the, a (ii) a, a, an, a, the, the, the, the QNo8: (i) to help (ii) playing (iii) to catch (iv) cooking (v) to work (vi) driving (vii) to go (viii) lending (ix) to buy (x) listening QNo9: 1 were. 2 had prepared. 3 arrived. 4 discovered. 5 had reserved. 6 had not had. 7 had given. 8 had also misunderstood. 9 required. 10 suspected.

Essay --

Political systems in Latin American countries have been ever-changing. Long periods of dictatorship were often followed by long periods of democracy in an on-going cycle that is one, if not the main reason as to why Latin American countries have not been able to develop quickly. Political instability has affected many aspects in countries such as Peru and Argentina, one of these aspects is freedom of the press. Freedom of the press has played a key role in Latin America, serving not only as a voice for the people, but as a trail of evidence for some of the most heinous crimes committed throughout the Cold War and post-Cold War eras. Many people have been punished and even died all in the struggle to freely criticize political, economic, or even religious issues in their own countries. Freedom of the press, a right that should always be preserved, has often dwindled in the light of dictatorships and governments that do not take criticism lightly. Freedom of the press is called by many a â€Å"negative† freedom or liberty. While positive freedoms are described as rights that allow people to take action about their own lives, negative freedoms are rights that no other person or entity is allowed to put constraints on. The government is not allowed to put obstacles on the people’s rights to communicate their sentiments. Nations were built under the principle of democracy, where people are granted the liberty to express and publish their criticisms and where it is the people who decide who stays on top and who leads them. For Peruvians and Argentineans, it has been a constant struggle to maintain this right. Through and after the Cold War, freedom of the press was easily taken away by oppressive governments, which is why freedom of the pr... ... the simple lack of it at times. The conclusion is simple: a country with no press and with no freedom for its citizens to express their opinions or discontent is a country with no democratic values. In the aftermath of the Cold War and the era of dictatorships, freedom of the press has taken its time to flourish once again. Slowly, Latin American countries such as Peru and Argentina have managed to recover and to trust the press as they previously had. It seems like this time around however, democracy has become a permanent feature in the political systems, and will be for a long time. Even though both of these countries are only partially-free at the moment, one hopes the future is a bright one. For too long the story reflected by the freedom of the press in Latin America has been the story of oppression and disillusionment, it is time for the story to change.

Critical response to ‘Z for Zachariah’ by Robert C. O’Brien Essay

The book I read is ‘Z for Zachariah’ by Robert C. O’Brien. I enjoyed this book because it contained few but excellent characters and is full of mystery and suspense. ‘Z for Zachariah’ is about a sixteen-year-old girl, called Ann Burden who thinks she is the only person to survive a nuclear war. However, as her diary entries progress, you learn of a person in a green suit who is pulling what looks like a trailer covered with the same green material as the suit approaching Ann Burden’s valley. Later in the diary you find out that the person is a man who had been an industrial chemist before the war, working for the Government designing a suit to protect people in the event of a nuclear explosion. His name is Mr Loomis and he is wearing the only one of these suits. When Mr Loomis finally arrives in the valley, he is amazed by the fact that there is water, which appears to be safe but Mr Loomis makes one severe mistake. When he checks the water for the level of radiation with his Geiger counter he in fact checks the clean water in the stream but then goes on to venture further down the valley, where he finds Ann Burden’s home where the polluted Burden Creek is nearby. Once Mr Loomis has seen inside Ann’s house (where Ann has cleverly hidden any clues that could show the visitor that there has been people living there recently) he then proceeds towards Burden Creek in the hope of getting his first bath in probably months. However, not realising that the stream and Creek are not connected and in fact the Creek runs into the valley from over the hill where the pollution is, he jumps right in. Within a very short period of time after Mr Loomis has had his bath he became very ill, as he had been exposed to a lot of radiation. When Mr Loomis becomes sick Ann then realises she will have to help him and that is when she first shows herself. Ann’s diary entries take you through the events that happen when she is and is not in the company of Mr Loomis. My favourite part of the book is the first three diary entries. In these diary entries Mr Loomis has not yet arrived in the valley however Ann has seen smoke from over the hill for three days, which she presumes is from a human made fire because it is in a thin column that it rises. The smoke comes at the same time everyday, in late afternoon. Each afternoon the smoke is nearer to Ann’s home. I like this part of the book the most because in it you find out what it has been like for Ann being alone for so long because her family left her to look for other people and had never returned. It is interesting to read Ann’s thoughts of being excited and scared that she may in fact not be the only person left in the world. It is obvious why Ann would be excited about someone else coming into the valley but maybe not so clear why she would be scared. Ann is scared because after the nuclear explosion some radio stations had still broadcasted, but towards the end of them broadcasting the presenters seemed to be going crazy. Here is a quote from the second diary entry which will explain why Ann is scared â€Å"Suppose a car came over the hill, and I ran out, and whoever was in it got out – suppose he was crazy? Or suppose it was someone mean, or cruel, and brutal? A murderer? What could I do?† After this quote, you realise that Ann is a very sensible and careful person because she decides to move her things to a cave nearby her home and make it look as though no one has lived in her house. That way she can watch whoever is coming into her valley and if they are crazy or mean she can stay in the cave unbeknown to the visitor and wait until they leave. At the end of the third diary entry Ann has still not seen anyone but knows that they are camping at the crossroads and exploring North, South, East, West and when they come into the South they will find Ann’s valley. The most remarkable character in the book I think is Ann Burden. She is careful, mature, kind, helpful, sensible, confused, and strategic/logical. In the following paragraph I will explain why Ann Burden is all of the things I have just said: The reason I think Ann is careful is because when Mr Loomis is first entering the valley she goes to the cave to live there as she does not know if Mr Loomis is ‘safe.’ During the book ‘Z for Zachariah’ you realise that in fact even though Ann is only sixteen she is more mature than Mr Loomis who is quite a bit older than Ann. The proof that shows this, is all of the words I am using to describe her and she also thinks about having children to begin the human-race again. The words kind, helpful and sensible describe Ann well because when Mr Loomis is ill with radiation poisoning she helps him and is kind to him even though he’s a stranger. Also Ann still helps Mr Loomis after he tried to rape her – she gives him half of everything i.e. eggs, milk and chicken and lets him have the comforts of her home while she moves into the cave. It is obvious that Ann is confused, as she does not know why Mr Loomis is being so horrible to her especially when she has done everything she can to be nice to him and to help him. The last words to describe Ann are strategic and logical; I think these words describe Ann well because when she does not want Mr Loomis to find her she thinks about what he can and cannot see e.g. when she builds a fire she thinks about where and how to build it so Mr Loomis can’t see it – she also thinks about what time of the day to light it. The style of ‘Z for Zachariah’ is in diary form. Throughout the book there were not many figures of speech, however, there were a few similes, here is a quote from the book that describes Ann’s dog Faro when he has returned from the dead lands where there is radiation, in it there is a simile â€Å"as thin as a skeleton.† The structure of ‘Z for Zachariah’ is in chronological order, each event happening in an order that makes sense and makes the story more intense and interesting. During the book, there is not much direct speech as the genre of the book is in diary form so it contains more of the thoughts and feelings of Ann Burden. The themes in the book are effects of modern technology, survival, dominance, bullying, age against youth, optimism/realism, breeding, art v science and religion v atheism. In the following sentences, I will discuss the themes that occur in ‘Z for Zachariah.’ The first theme ‘effects of modern technology’ is the theme that allowed the story to occur because nothing in the book would have happened had there not been a nuclear explosion. The themes of survival, dominance and age against youth are all linked together and are in a way very similar to each other. These three themes are perhaps the strongest and most occurring ones throughout the book, I will explain why: survival of course is going to be a major issue, Ann is the one who thinks about this the most having thought of growing her own crops, so when the supplies run out in the shop she will still have food to survive, and that is just one example. Throughout the book Mr Loomis tries to be the stereotypical ‘Alpha male,’ he wants everything to be done his own way and to be done by him. For example when Ann said she would go into the town with the safe suit to collect books, even though Mr Loomis is still ill he refuses to let her go, perhaps thinking she is incapable or he could have been worried she wouldn’t come back with the safe suit, although I think the first scenario is more likely. The only time Mr Loomis seemed to let Ann do things her way is when he could not do things for himself, however, he never admitted it. ‘Age against youth’ is another strong theme as throughout the book you realise that Mr Loomis even though he is older he is not always wiser and more mature, in fact Ann is definitely the more mature of the two characters. Optimism and realism are two words that can explain Ann and Mr Loomis’ completely different personalities. Ann being the optimist who thinks that the results of an action will always be good and Mr Loomis being the realist he makes decisions based on facts and not on false hope. Throughout the book breeding is a theme, but more with Ann – she thinks towards the future and beginning the human-race again. The theme of art v science is one that occurs throughout the book. As Ann is interested in art and Mr Loomis is interested in science, a few quarrels occur between them. However, ‘quarrels’ is perhaps the wrong word because Mr Loomis always seemed to get his own way. Again, I will use the example of when Ann wanted to use the safe suit to collect some engineering and physics books for Mr Loomis; she also suggested that she get some for herself. Such as poetry. Yet Mr Loomis refused and said, â€Å"You could not go. Understand that. Keep away from the suit. Never touch it.† After Mr Loomis had given Ann his lecture, she could not understand why he had become so angry. It was alright if he wanted something but as soon as Ann wanted something to do with her interests, it was too much of a risk. Religion v atheism is a theme in the book. Ann being the religious one and Mr Loomis the atheist. I don’t think Ann is strongly religious, I just think she finds going to the church and praying a ‘comforting factor.’ Earlier I said Mr Loomis is an atheist. This means that he doesn’t believe that any god or gods exist, therefore he does not understand why Ann would want to go to the church and ‘waste her time’ praying. I enjoyed this book because there were few characters, which allowed you to get to know them better. I also liked the style of the book being in diary form because you didn’t have to read the minute by minute accounts of what is happening in the book you only get to read the exciting and more intense parts which would be written in a diary. The thing that made the book a little boring was the fact that there weren’t many different figures of speech. The length I though was too long, some parts of the book seemed to be dragged out to give it a longer length, for example when Mr Loomis is sick the book got a little boring because in the diary entries you really were only told what Ann had did that day, there wasn’t enough character interaction. One thing that I thought ruined the book was the ending, I thought it was exciting when you were told that there was hope that there could be other people still living and you wanted to keep reading and know if there was anyone else out there, but it just stopped. Taking the entire book into account my opinion is that it is quite good as I think it gives a good insight into what could happen if there is a nuclear explosion – it is realistic.
